DRESS CODE FOR THE 2008-2009 SCHOOL YEAR
Realizing that we want to create and maintain the best possible image for our school, and that a dress code for our school should reflect one’s self respect, pride, good judgment and awareness of dress appropriate to place and action, the following dress code is in effect.  The essential things to keep in mind are modesty, good taste and appearance, with no undo attention drawn to oneself.  Clothes should be neat, clean, modest and not excessively baggy or tight-fitting.  We want to stress that the dress code begins with the PARENT’S SUPPORT AND ENFORCEMENT.  Ultimately the responsibility belongs with the student.  Consequences for being out of dress code are outlined in the Discipline Policies and Procedures section.

Dress Up Days - Dress up days are listed on the school calendar.  The Mothers’ Mass (December), Teacher Recognition Mass (January), Fathers’ Mass (March), the Spirit of St. Joseph Mass (April), and the Senior Awards Assembly (May) are dress up days for all students and staff.  Additionally, juniors are required to dress up for the Jr. Ring Mass, and seniors are required to dress up for the Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation.

The following attire is the only acceptable dress code for these occasions:  Gentlemen:  Dress pants, belt, dress shirt (to be tucked in all day) and tie (to be kept tied all day).  Ladies:  Dresses or skirts (NO shorter than 1” above the knee). Dresses must have sleeves and not be low cut. NO halter, thin strapped or sun dresses are allowed. No cleavage may be showing.  No see-through material.  Slits in dresses and skirts may not be any higher than mid-thigh.

If wearing a skirt, dress pants or dress capri pant (below the knee) a dress top with collar or full turtle neck sweater must be worn.

For both Ladies and Gentlemen:  NO flip flops, Uggs, shorts, denim material, t-shirts.  Sweatshirts or jackets are not to be worn during Mass.

ONLY THE FOLLOWING IS ACCEPTABLE ATTIRE FOR EVERYDAY SCHOOL WEAR:

Collared Shirts and Blouses - A collared shirt or blouse must be worn every day.  Shirts must have sleeves.  Full turtle neck sweaters are allowed.  Shirts must be buttoned, not tied at the waist or higher.  Shirts may not be low cut.  Modesty is a must.  No shirt of any kind can be worn over the collared shirt.

The only exception to the above is on Fridays (non dress up day), students may wear a spirit shirt without a collar, provided it is an official, approved St. Joseph t-shirt.

Dresses - Dresses or skirts are to be NO shorter than 1” above the knee. Dresses must have sleeves.  NO halter, thin strapped or sun dresses without sleeves are allowed, and dresses must not be low cut and no cleavage may show.  Modesty is a must. No see-through material.  Slits in dresses and skirts may not be any higher than mid-thigh.

Pants and Shorts - Pants must be ankle length, worn at the waist, and must not have an elastic waist. Capri pants are acceptable for females.  No excessively short or excessively long shorts are allowed.  No shorts shorter than mid-thigh or 3” above the knee.  No shorts longer than the bottom of the knee.  Athletic-type board shorts are not for school wear.  Belts are encouraged for males.

Footwear - Shoes must be worn at all times.  Slippers, even hard soled are not appropriate.  Any footwear deemed excessively casual will not be allowed.

Makeup - Females are allowed to wear moderate makeup.

Hair - Hair cuts must be appropriately styled, well-groomed, in good taste and must be a natural hair color only (moderate highlights are acceptable, but no extremes of multiple colors are allowed).  Specific for females:  a minimum length of 1”.  Specific for males:  A minimum of ¼” in length is required.  No shaved heads are allowed. Hair is to be no longer than the bottom of the ears, eyebrows and top of collar.  Sideburns cannot extend below the bottom of the earlobe and no wider than 1”.  Males must be clean shaven every day. Male students who are not clean shaven will be required to shave at school before returning to class. Mustaches may be worn but only extend to the corners of the mouth.
